Tack Weld- a joint between two metals made by welding at isolated points to permit completion of the full weld.

Taper-an acute angle on a surface.  When applied intentionally it may be in preparation for a weld, or it may be the unintentional result of a process, ie plasma cutting.

Tempering- a process whereby previously hardened or normalised steel is heated to a temperature below critical temperature eutectoid temperature and cooled at a suitable rate, with the aim of increasing ductility and toughness, also increases the grain size of the matrix.

Tensile Strength- the strength of a material, expressed by the greatest compressive stress it can bear without breaking.

Tin- Chemical symbol Sn, a selivery metallic element resistant to corrosion.  Use regularly as a coating on other metals, or in alloys to increase corrosion resistance.

Titanium- Chemical Symbol Ti, low density, strong, corrosion resistant metallic element.  Added to some steels to make them immune from carbide precipitation.

Tolerance- a permitted deviation, or range of deviation from a specified or desired measurment.

Trace Element- used to describe elements which exist within steel but in such small quantities they cannot accurately be quantitatively evaluated.

Transformation Temperature- the temperature at which a change in phase, or transformation occurs .

Tungsten- Chemical Symbol W, Tungsten. A grey metal, ductile and malleable with a high tensile strength.  Used as an alloying element in steels where retention of strength at high temperatures is important.
