Nickel- Chemical symbol Ni, Nickel is a silver white metal, of medium hardness, high levels of ductility and malleability with good resistance to chemical and atmospheric corrosion.  As an alloying element, it effectively increases hardenability and corrosion resistance.  It is the base element in nickel alloys, and found in smaller quantities in other alloys and steels.

Nickel Alloy- An alloys whose main constituent is nickel.

Niobium- Chemical symbol Nb, Niobium is also known as Columbium.

Nitriding- The process of surface hardening steels by introducing nitrogen, by holding at elevated temperatures with metal in contact with nitrogenous material, normally ammonia.  The process produces a hard and adherent surface which can increase the life cycle of the steel.

Nitrogen- Chemical Symbol N, is a non-metallic colourless odourless element, constituting 78% of earths atmosphere.  Combines with many metals to form nitrides.

Non-Ferrous Metal- any metal which is free of iron.

Normalising-a process designed to refine crystal structure and eliminate internal stress.  Involves heating material to above transformation range followed by cooling in air to a temperature well below the transformation range.
