Ladle Metallurgy- a process typically applied in a ladle furnace, for alloying, deoxidisation and desulphurisation, as well as temperature adjustment prior to casting steels.
Lamination- A defect or abnormal structure in a metal, due to a spearation or weakness, generally aligned parallel to the worked surface of material.
Lap Weld- the term given to a weld formed by lapping two pieces of material, pressing or hammering then welding. This type of weld is often found in pipes, tubes and fittings, where by the surfaces to be welded are bevelled to allow the two pieces of material to overlap in order to be welded.
Levelling- the process of flattening rolled sheet or plate.
LME- The London Metal Exchange
Longitudinal Direction- the primary direction of the grain flow in a piece of metal.
Low-Carbon Steel- A steel containing 0.1-0.3% C (Carbon), and less than 0.6% Mn (Manganese).
