Impact- a part formed in a confining die from a metal slab, usually cold, by rapid single stroke application of force through a punch, causing the metal to flow around the punch and/or through an opening in the punch or die.
Impact Test- A test to determine the ability of a metal to withstand impact, such as the Charpy test.
Inclusions- Particles of non-metallic materials present in a solid metallic matrix
Induction Hardening- a method of heat treating where by material is heated by electrical induction above its transformation range and then quenched. As the metal is quenched it undergoes martensitic transformation increasing the hardness of the metal.
Ingot- A cast bar or block of metal suitable for reworking.
Intergranular Corrosion- a form of corrosion where boundaries of crystallites of the material are more susceptible to corrosion than their insides.
Ion Plating-A generic term applied to film deposition processes in which the substrate surface and the growing film are subjected to continuous or periodic flux of energetic bombarding particles.
Iron- Chemical Symbol Fe. A silvery-white, ductile magnetic metal, Iron is the primary element of steel. Often alloyed with other elements to produce alloy steels with desired properties.
Iron Carbide- A hard brittle intermetallic compound of iron and carbon
Iron Ore- Iron-bearing minerals from which iron can be extracted on a commercial scale.
Isothermal Forging- in this process the dies are maintained at the same temperature as the forging stock, eliminating die chill completely and keeping the forging stock at the same temperature through out the process.
